MSB Fundamentals of Coaching is an introduction to coaching for teachers and leaders in international schools.

This course provides a foundation for enhanced communication and leadership skills with hands-on training and a focus on experiential participation.

Coaching is now widely acknowledged as an essential leadership competency. A coaching approach to professional dialogue creates the conditions for better thinking and therefore, greater access to creativity, innovation and commitment across an organisation.

You will experience the powerful tools and communication techniques of coaching and have numerous opportunities to coach your peers and receive feedback on your newly acquired skills.

Who is it for?

There is no prerequisite to participate in this course, other than working as a teacher or leader in one of the world’s schools.

The course can be taken stand-alone and is recommended to anyone seeking practical tools for managing relationships with others, leading teams and having more effective professional dialogue.

These flexible skills are compatible with different contexts and roles. You will quickly observe the benefits of taking a coaching approach to conversations with your colleagues.

This programme is an ideal stepping stone towards future coaching courses if you are interested in achieving a professional qualification.

The Experience

Participants are introduced to the principles of coaching, with a focus on experiential learning rather than traditional front of room (zoom) delivery. The entire programme is run online, but this is not at the expense of it being interactive, dynamic and highly engaging.

    Exploring OSCAR, GROW and the MSB model, you will understand how you can apply coaching models in your context.

    The difference between coaching, mentorship, and traditional leadership.

    How to use coaching skills to enhance your personal communication approach.

    How to design effective relationships with your teams so as to improve communication and team effectiveness.

  • 3 levels of listening

    How to use the three levels of listening—internal, focused, and global—to deepen your relationships.

  • Powerful questions

    How to use powerful questions in coaching conversations to acutely identify what really matters.

  • Utilising coaching

    How you can use coaching within your current school-based role; whether this is for leading teams, managing others, having generative challenging conversations or with students in the classroom.

What is the Commitment?

The course will run on Zoom over four days, with two 3-hour sessions each day (with plenty of breaks).

The format is 2 x 2 x 2.

  • 2 consecutive days of training

  • 2 week break to apply your learning

Will I get a qualification?

MSB Fundamental of Coaching is an International Coaching Federation (ICF) accredited training programme.

This means you will acquire 28 hours of certified training hours, which, if you choose, you can put towards building a portfolio to gain further accreditation with the ICF.

The ICF is the largest accreditation body in the world, providing the gold standard for coach training.

The Fundamentals of Coaching programme is led by two of Making Stuff Better’s dedicated coaches. Together, Matt Hall and Caroline Beckett have a combined 40 years of experience in education and teaching and will be with you every step of the way on your coaching journey.

Matt got his first honours degree from Cambridge University, and continued to do this Masters there. 

In his first school he went from being a Geography teacher to being on the Senior Leadership Team within 4 years, and then subsequently moved to become vice principal in City Academy Bristol before transitioning to be deputy head in the British School of Oman.

Matt co-created MSB in 2016. He’s always been one to push the boundaries not just for himself, but also for others. He’s a great believer in living life to the full.

Caroline Beckett

After many years working solely in the education sector both in the UK and overseas, Caroline took a leap of faith and started her coach training journey in 2015.

As a sensitive, supportive and energetic coach she has a proven track record of enabling clients to make, meet and exceed meaningful goals.

With extensive experience across sectors, Caroline is culturally sensitive and well-placed to coach in the international setting.
